Automatically Updating Contact List

Whilst updating my contact list (paper) i had a thought what if every person could store there contact list(s) online and everyone in that list is sent a text message confirming they want to be on the list.
Then whenever anyone updates there phone number on there list it updates automatically on everyone else’s.
So instead of the normal old manually adding/editing contacts on your phone, they could be download/synchronised once daily say from the website. I understand this will probably involve modifying the firmware and is not an app but see this has a place in the cloud.
Obviously there would be a lot of database work and storage but surely this is the next step.
The first thing/easiest thing that springs to mind is like a private RSS feed but i’m putting this out there into the public domain as apple are not going give me any credit or anything.
Anyone with any ideas/suggestions to get this out there please comment below.
